The Art Galleries at Bucknell, Internships
The Bucknell Art Galleries, in collaboration with the Art and Art History Departments, offer two opportunities for student internships. Students will learn gain first-hand experience in gallery operations in addition to learning and actively engaging with our staff and student attendants/docents. The internship roles include but are not limited to exploring: how exhibitions are curated and produced; how the permanent collection is conserved, documented, and used in research; and how the galleries educate the public about art.
The Art Galleries at Bucknell, Graduate Assistants
Graduate Assistants work in the gallery an average of 20 hours/week (except holidays and University recesses.) They split their time between focused long-term projects outlined above as well as daily tasks in support of the Galleries’ programs and operations, including, but not limited to: moving collections objects, preparing for public programs, blogging on the gallery blog, giving short gallery tours to students and staff, matting, framing, packing and installing art.
_Curatorial Graduate Assistant
This assistant works with gallery staff to learn how exhibitions are curated and produced in a professional art gallery/museum environment. Assignments include researching artists and the exhibition history of artworks, creating exhibition documentation, installing exhibitions, and other tasks that contribute to developing exhibitions. The Curatorial Graduate Assistant guest-curates the Annual Student Art Exhibition produced in partnership with the Dept. of Art and Art History.
_Museum Education Graduate Assistant
This assistant works with gallery staff to learn how galleries and museums educate the public about art in an informal life-long learning environment. The assistant helps with diverse educational strategies from wall text and labels, to leading gallery tours for students and community members, to lectures and other public programs at both the Samek Art Gallery on campus and the Downtown Art Gallery. The Museum Education Graduate Assistant is instrumental in developing and implementing interpretive programs at the new Downtown Art Gallery.
The Art Galleries are dedicated to providing valuable museum learning opportunities and operational experience to our students. The Samek and Downtown Art Gallery student gallery attendants/docents are trained to lead visitors through our permanent collection and special exhibitions. Each student is trained to greet and offer resources to our audiences. In addition, these students serve as gallery attendants, responsible for monitoring our spaces and securing the safety of our exhibitions.
The Gallery Engagement Team (G.E.T)
The Gallery Engagement Team at Bucknell University is a student-run group devoted to creating awareness and advocating community involvement with the campus’ Samek Art Gallery. G.E.T. members work closely with the Samek Gallery Director, Richard Rinehart, as well as other members of the staff, to promote gallery exhibitions and events. The group is also in contact with many other student organizations, encouraging the use of the gallery as a unique space for art-related or unrelated events.
