Hangin’ at the President’s House

I missed a few exciting happenings at the Samek Art Gallery while I was on Maternity Leave this past Spring, including the opening of the new Downtown Art Gallery and the artist talk by Mendi & Keith Obadike. On April 3rd there was a lecture on campus by Bucknell Alumnus Makoto Fujimura, Class of 1983, and Bucknell’s President John Bravman. I also wasn’t able to attend Creative Engagement: The Questions Science and Art Ask of Each Other but was, fortunately, able to watch a recording of Mako and John’s talk on WVIA-TV.

If you attended the talk or were able to watch a recording of it, you can imagine my surprise to see that Mako presented President Bravman and Bucknell with a gift of his painting Golden View.

When I returned from leave I had the privilege of accessioning Golden View in our Permanent Collection. If you have not seen one of Mako’s pieces up close, I high recommend the experience. His works, Golden View included, are beautifully stunning!

Last week Pam and I got to spend an hour “hanging” at the President’s Residence. Okay, okay… so we didn’t exactly get to kick back on the couch and eat potato chips. Our mission was to hang Mako’s painting in a very prominent place in the foyer.

President Bravman and his family host many guests and events in their home so we are very excited that our newest acquisition is able to be on display, rather than put away in collection storage. Doesn’t Golden View look great in it’s new home?
