Just in time for Halloween festivities, the Samek Art Gallery and the Weis Center for Performing Arts are co-programming two evenings of music that are sure to haunt!
Beginning on Monday, October 31st in the Samek Art Gallery, Theremin musician Rob Schwimmer will perform an intimate show set to the backdrop of the fall exhibition, Dusk to Dusk: Unsettled, Unraveled, Unreal.
The Theremin is a musical instrument that uses a metal antenna to determine the frequency and volume of sound based on the musician’s hand position. Electric signals are amplified and the resulting sounds are commonly described as “spooky” and “haunting.” Schwimmer’s performance of eclectic Theremin notes is the perfect counterpart to the eerie mood of Dusk to Dusk. Set within the gallery, this event will combine the visual and the performative arts, transforming the Samek into both an art gallery and a sound chamber.
Programming for Schwimmer’s visit will include a film screening of, “Theremin: An Electronic Odyssey” sponsored by the Weis Center for Performing Arts also the evening of October 31st at 7pm in the Forum of the Elaine Langone Center. The film will also be featured on the Samek Art Gallery Video Wall (3rd Fl, ELC) from Monday, October 29- Wednesday, October 2.
On Tuesday, October 30th Schwimmer will perform live in the Weis Center lobby beginning at 7:30 pm. Schwimmer will perform a ninety-minute set on the piano, Theremin and Haken Continuum and waerphone. He will cover original and other works. This event is free and open to the public. Schwimmer is a composer-pianist/keyboardist and Thereminist who has performed and recorded throughout the world. A founding member of the highly acclaimed Polygraph Lounge music and comedy duo, Rob was recently the piano soloist at the Crest Butte Festival in Colorado. Schwimmer believes the theremin can do more than produce “spooky” music — he believes they might even be considered beautiful. His compositions have been featured in theater, television series and movies, documentaries and feature films. Schwimmer has worked and played with Simon and Garfunkel, most recently at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame 25th Anniversary show where he was the featured theremin soloist on “The Boxer”
