March 27: Cherl Kling, Counselor, and AOD Specialist at Bucknell University will explore the comorbidity of addiction and mental health disorders with a discussion about factors that lead to both occurring together. She will lead a dialogue about fighting stigma to affect change.
April 10: Adrienne Bobb, LPN Charge Nurse Addiction Medicine at Watsontown Comprehensive Treatment Center, will host a discussion about what the dispensary nurses do day to day explaining assessments on patients and dosing methadone.
April 17: Sandra Cook, CRNP, will speak about overcoming Stigma as a barrier to care for Opioid Use Disorder. Many people are not seeking treatment because of the Stigma that those with addiction are considered “less than” or that addiction is a choice. Addiction is a chronic medical disease like Diabetes, COPD, Hypertension. Once the community at large understands that addiction can be diagnosed, treated, and people can recover without judgment from the medical community, then people who need treatment will begin to seek help.

May 15: Kelli Zimmerman Watsontown Comprehensive Treatment Center Clinic Director will discuss the topic of “Addiction is Not a Choice.” There is a great deal of stigma surrounding Opioid Addiction as a choice, and it truly is no more a choice than Heart Failure, Asthma, or any other chronic disease.

June 12: Dr. Gary Stoner, an Ob/Gyn physician at Geisinger Medical Center for 30 years, is Director of the Women’s Health Opioid Use Disorder Program. His focus of practice is toward the care of pregnant women with this disorder. He lectures widely on the topic of the stigma and attempts to remind the audience that addiction comes in many forms that affect all of us in some manner, shape, or form. His passion for this topic will be evident as he considers stigma the rate-limiting step for successful and effective management.
