The evening of Thursday, February 21th, the Samek Art Gallery will host The Gallery Series featuring New York-based Balkan a cappella group, Black Sea Hotel. The trio recreates traditional Balkan music, generating their own inimitable, gutsy sound. Sometimes lyrical and ethereal, sometimes dissonant and driving, their distinct yet unified voices create a harmonic blend that has often been called, “haunting and otherworldly.”
The Gallery Series, a public program of experimental and performance art was originally founded by Bill Duckworth as part of his commitment to fostering new audiences for contemporary music. Assistant Professor of Music, Barry Long, manages the program and continues to move it into the future of Bucknell programming. Over several years, The Gallery Series has continued to grow as an ongoing string of “pop-up” campus performances.
The performance by Black Sea Hotel will mark the Gallery Series’ first appearance in Samek in 2013. The Gallery Series was previously highlighted in 2011 during the Samek exhibition, “The Black List Project” a selection of portraiture by photographer Timothy Greenfield-Sanders with a performance by the The Barry Long Trio. The program returned in the Fall of 2012, during Arts Everywhere.
Black Sea Hotel will perform in the main gallery (located on the Third Floor of the Elaine Langone Center, at Bucknell University) during a public reception from 7:30-9:30pm. This is a free event.
