Summer Salon I: 160 Years of Collecting Art

May 18- Sep 1, 2013

Samek Art Gallery, 3rd Fl, Elaine Langone Center at Bucknell University

In 1725, the Paris Salon debuted at the Academie des Beaux-Arts. Works hung floor to ceiling (“salon-style”) in order to showcase recent graduates from the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. In 1853, Bucknell University began building a museum collection that today numbers over 5,400 objects that span ancient to 21st-century cultures. In 2013, the Samek Art Gallery will combine these academic art traditions in a Summer Salon that celebrates 160 years of collecting art. This year’s Summer Salon presents a galaxy of artworks arranged in the order they entered the collection so that history unfolds on the gallery walls. Future salons will continue the series that spans centuries and delights the senses.
