February 12 – March 16, 2014
Samek Gallery-Conversations Gallery
Presented in partnership with the Women’s and Gender Studies Department and the Women’s Resource Center, artist Sophia Wallace’s Cliteracy Project is a new way of talking about citizenship, sexuality, human rights, and bodies.
Cliteracy addresses citizenship and body sovereignty through the medium of text-based objects, unauthorized street installation, performance and sculptural forms. Half the world has a clitoris yet the organ remains invisible in visual representation, ignored by western medicine, and is even excised in some parts of the world. Cliteracy is a generative work, offering new language outside of the paradigm of lack and shame that often characterize the sexualized body. One of the most radical ideas explored within Cliteracy is that access to pleasure, is a fundamental right of all human beings. The project has gone viral globally and is often described as a movement.
All works by Sophia Wallace and on view courtesy of the artist. Cliteracy, 100 Natural Laws installation was completed during Wallace’s Van Lier Fellowship in the Art Law Residency.
