New Additions to the Samek Art Museum Collection
The Samek Art Museum is the repository and professional steward of the University’s art collection; any artwork the University owns or acquires is part of the Museum’s collection. The collection grows each year and currently numbers nearly 6000 unique objects. As an academic institution, Bucknell University and the Samek Art Museum have a scholastic responsibility and opportunity to provide its students with access to the collection for study, while also serving as stewards of these institutional and cultural assets. With the support of the University, the Museum is charged with maintaining the highest legal, ethical, moral, and professional standards in the execution of these responsibilities.
The Samek’s collection holdings are diverse and eclectic, including objects by artists and cultures around the globe, in a wide variety of media, ranging in period from ancient to contemporary. This breadth enables the Collection to serve as a teaching resource to students across academic disciplines, and for a broad university and regional constituency.
The Museum is interested in collecting works that build upon the strengths of the Museum’s collection, including historic, modern and contemporary prints and photographs. The Museum is increasing its holdings of art by artists who have been historically underrepresented in the art world, including, but not limited to, artists of color, queer artists, and female artists. The Museum is also adding to its collection of new media artworks that will further ensure that the Museum – and Bucknell – is making a unique contribution to the historical record through our distinctive collection. The Museum continues to collect work that supports teaching and research on campus. Donations and purchases that meet multiple collecting goals are of particular interest.
